Recognizing this is VERY similar to the last cocktail I made, I apologize. I just cannot get enough citrus and spice at the moment. It’s probably subconscious wishful thinking… summer will eventually be here, right? None the less, ’tis the season for my most favorite of citrus fruits: Blood oranges!
Happy St. Patrick’s Day to all you Irish by blood and at heart out there! While I am not any amount of Irish that I know of (some of my family history is a bit fuzzy…), so I thought this week I’d celebrate today with a loosely Irish-inspired Minnesota cocktail.
You guys, it’s hot. It’s like 90°F, and a margarita is my favorite hot weather drink. That is why this weekend, I am making it my mission to make sure you have the knowledge to make a classic margarita. No Cuervo mix here! Let’s get at it!
– 1 1/2 oz. tequila (100% agave a must, preferably a “reposado” simply because I think they’re better)
– 1 1/2 oz. triple sec (or Cointreau if you prefer)
– 1 to 1 1/4 oz. of lime juice
– Optional: Salt for the rim of the glass
Glass prep: If you’re a salted rim kind of person, rub part of your lime around the rim of the glass and dip in salt. I can never make up my mind, so I usually do about half of the rim.
Drink Makin’ Time: Add all the ingredients and some ice to a cocktail shaker and Shake, Shake, Shake, Senora. (preferably while listening to Jump in the Line. Trust me on this one.) You can also add some simple syrup or straigh up sugar if you like yours a little sweeter. After you’ve finished shaking and dancing, strain into a glass over more ice because it’s hot out people!!!. A slice of lime as a garnish and drink, drink, drink, senora!
Happy St. Patrick’s Day to all Irish and non-Irish alike! I am definitely in the latter category. Fittingly enough, my husband and I have sort of accidentally started our own St. Patrick’s Day tradition that involves absolutely nothing Irish whatsoever, which is exactly where the inspiration for today’s cocktail stems from.
Every year, I get excited about the prospect of going out and hitting the bars. I love beer, I love whiskey, so St. Paddy’s is pretty much directly up my alley. We usually make it out somewhere in downtown Minneapolis or St. Paul, but I quickly get fed up with long waits and rude inebriates. Inevitably, that ends up meaning we go to another, less busy establishment which is more often than not something completely opposite of Irish – Mexican. That way, I can actually sit and have a conversation with him at the bar rather than shouting because I can’t hear anything while continuously getting elbowed by someone in light-up sparkly goggles trying to order 12 Jameson shots for his buddies.
For the last two years in a row, my husband and I have celebrated St. Paddy’s with margaritas and it has been awesome. We figured, hey! They’re green drinks too!! Besides, I’m sure even Leprechauns need vacations, and I’ll bet they love a beach and a margarita just as much as the rest of us, which is why this one is called Leprechaun’s Getaway:
1 oz. Tequila
½ oz. melon liqueur (I used leftover Midori from the Shamrock Squeeze recipe)
½ oz. Triple Sec
2 oz. lime juice
Splash of agave nectar
Combine all ingredients in a shaker filled with ice, shake, and strain into an ice-filled glass like my Chicago Skyline lowball glasses. Garnish with a lime.
Seriously so easy… just like walking into a Mexican restaurant and ordering a drink on St. Paddy’s! The melon flavor in this one is pretty light, but you could always add more Midori or play around with the ratios to get the taste just the way you want it.
