Spicy Blood Orange Margarita

Recognizing this is VERY similar to the last cocktail I made, I apologize. I just cannot get enough citrus and spice at the moment. It’s probably subconscious wishful thinking… summer will eventually be here, right? None the less, ’tis the season for my most favorite of citrus fruits: Blood oranges!

Admittedly, there were a LOT of options with these bad boys from a cocktail standpoint, but we were making tacos. A margarita just felt right. Keeping things short and sweet, let’s get to the goods – the recipe:


  • 2 oz Mezcal (tequila works too, but the smoky flavor of Mezcal is extra tasty)
  • 1 oz Triple Sec
  • 3 oz fresh squeezed blood orange juice
  • Cilantro (4-6 leaves)
  • Jalapeno

In the bottom of a cocktail shaker, muddle the cilantro, Triple Sec and a slice of jalapeno about 1/4 inch thick with the seeds removed. Add ice, Mezcal, and blood orange juice. Shake well. At this point, if you want a bit more kick to your drink, feel free to add another slice of jalapeno, this time with the seeds included. Shake 1-3 times and that’s it!! That’s seriously all it takes, or your mouth will probably be on fire. Pour over ice and enjoy!
